‘Buy one give one free’ concept gets going in Oldham

May 11, 2015 by Paul Leave a Comment

Bean Good is a not-for-profit community café based in the centre of Oldham that was the idea of drug and alcohol treatment service Acorn (part of Calico Group). It gives customers the chance to pass a meal on to someone else for free.

When a customer donates £1.50 or more, they are given a token which can be given to someone else, who can exchange it for another drink or meal – completely free of charge.

The café’s chef is Acorn employee Paul Cross, a former drug addict, who makes fresh meals and desserts with a different set of ingredients every day. He is training up recovering addicts who use Acorn’s services and are volunteering at the café – to help build their confidence and a career.

Free Big Lunch packs now available

April 16, 2015 by Paul Leave a Comment

As attention turns to summer, why not plan-in something a bit different this year. A Big Lunch street party could help feed community spirit, provide the perfect recipe to have fun with your neighbours and encourage friendlier, safer neighbourhoods.

This year’s Big Lunch is on Sunday 7th June. You can download the free Big Lunch pack at www.thebiglunch.com or by calling 0845 850 8181.

Emma Smith, from The Big Lunch team, has also written a guest post on the NANM web site with examples of how people around the country are finding that organising a Big Lunch has helped get other things going in their community. That conversations started at a Big Lunch can lead in all sorts of directions. Read the blog – Enjoy a taste of community spirit – Free Big Lunch packs now available
