Birmingham map community issues online

Birmingham City Council and local residents can now work more closely together to discuss issues and identify trends in the community through a brand new web tool. The ‘Birmingham Civic Dashboard’ enables residents to see local issues reported to the council – such as housing repairs and anti-social behaviour – on an online interactive map.

Police in Cleveland set up new residents groups

A Police Community Support Officer in Eston has set up a Residents’ Association to give local people a regular platform to voice concerns and hear updates on what the police have done to address their concerns. The residents’ association which includes the local housing association, neighbourhood management, the Fire Brigade, and the local authority, has already helped provide repairs to the estate among other things.

The Willenhall Community Forum opens community cafe

The Hagard Community Centre in Willenhall, which is run by the Willenhall Community Forum has a new ‘Communi-Tea Café’ to help fund its wider work, and provide a place for residents to meet and eat. The opening of the café has also created an employment opportunity funded through the Future Jobs Fund.

Community payback in Redcar and Cleveland

Six low-risk inmates from Kirklevington Grange Prison near Yarm have spent four weeks in a supervised project to make fire breaks in the Eston Hills. They have created more than a dozen fire breaks by clearing areas in the gorse and saplings. The initiative was a partnership between Cleveland Fire Brigade, the prison, Redcar and Cleveland Council’s Greater Eston Neighbourhood Management Team and Cleveland Police.

Glasgow assesses impact of neighbourhood management

Neighbourhood management was introduced to Glasgow in 2007, and the team have just conducted a follow up survey to assess the impact that it has had so far. The results show that most people are satisfied with local neighbourhood as a place to live; feel they belong in the area; and, that they feel safe in their neighbourhood.
